Junichiro once kept ledgers of his own breath count during meditation, certain that even stillness could be graded and found wanting, so it was almost poetic that the universe chose that exact vanity to humble him. Beneath a nameless bridge, he had crouched to study a single blade of grass, cataloguing its imperfections with the same merciless eye he turned on his failing sword-brothers, when some nimble-fingered degen aped straight into his coin purse and vanished before he finished his critique of the grass's posture. He did not chase the thief; a first son does not scramble undignified through mud, he told himself, though the truth was he simply hadn't noticed until the weight at his hip was gone, proof that his famous discipline had been staring at weeds instead of watching his own flank. Ashamed beyond words, he retreated into hermitage, vowing daily rituals of frugality and vigilance, yet he still finds himself three hours deep into rating the symmetry of moss patterns while his rice goes uncooked and his coin purse, now empty by habit, hangs forgotten and unguarded at his side. Even in exile, Junichiro grades his own failure with brutal precision, awarding himself, as always, the lowest score in the dojo.'
