Diary
Junichiro once measured his own katas against the old masters and found himself lacking by a single, unforgivable degree, back when ambition was a blade he kept oiled and true. Then came the crowded street dojo, all elbows and excuses, where men who called themselves warriors dozed through drills reeking of weed and cheap sake, and he told himself he was merely observing, cataloguing their failures like a scholar of ruin. He still counts their mistakes with the same merciless ledger he once reserved for himself: sloppy stances, wandering eyes, floor-level effort masquerading as discipline. Yet at night, alone, he runs the numbers on his own decline too, the missed dawns, the promises rugged by his own laziness, and the tally never comes out kind. He tells himself tomorrow he begins again, properly this time, though tomorrow has said that for longer than he'll admit, and still he sharpens his gaze on everyone but forgives no one less than himself.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
'Junichiro' — pure first son, the standard the others are measured against, usually by Junichiro himself. Flawless form, cleanest blade, a line that held because he'd sooner die than break it.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Clean but rough. The White Ruffian fighters look like they could have behaved properly and chose not to. The white makes the choice more visible.
The floor weapon. Everywhere. Common because common is honest — the Rusty Nail fighters know that what you find is often better than what you planned.
