Diary
Junichiro once measured his stance to the width of a tatami mat and his breath to the count of eight, the eldest son of a line that did not forgive wasted motion. Then came the sparring day he still cannot speak of at family dinners, the one where a joint meant to loosen his shoulders instead loosened his entire schedule, and he woke in the goat pen behind the dojo with straw in his topknot and the animals arranged around him like a disappointed council of elders. He has since rebuilt a ledger of personal standards, wakes at five, inspects his own footwork in the mirror with the same cold eye he once used to judge lesser students, and still somehow finds a way to fail the discipline by lunch, usually near a vending machine or a card table. His family believes he was meditating in the hills that week, and he lets them believe it, filing the goats under a category he privately labels unforgivable but unrepeatable. He tells himself perfection is still possible, one clean rep at a time, even as the goats, unseen, remain the harshest judges he has ever faced.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Lived-in color. The Warm Grey background belongs to fighters who have been through enough that their edges have softened without their core changing.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Half the statement. The Skull Sleeve fighters communicate their philosophy in one arm — the other arm is for whatever needs doing next.
'Junichiro' — pure first son, the standard the others are measured against, usually by Junichiro himself. Flawless form, cleanest blade, a line that held because he'd sooner die than break it.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The Dojo's version of a mohawk. More specific, more named. The Dejen Mohawk fighters chose the Dojo's interpretation of rebellion over the generic one.
Heavy, ceramic, purpose-built for one thing and used for another. The Giant Sake Bottle fighters are creative about their arsenal.
