Diary
Junichiro, first son of a lineage that once measured a blade's edge to the width of a rice grain, retreated to his futon to attempt greatness the only way left available to a man with no war and no dojo, and by his own exacting rubric he scored the attempt an honest seven out of ten, which for him is practically a parade. He annotated the effort in his mind the way his father once annotated swordsmanship, noting form, noting follow-through, noting that the ceiling of his rented room in Kyoto is not, structurally, an inspiring vista. Still, confidence bloomed strange and stubborn in his chest, the first true praise he has given himself in months, since he cannot help grading everyone including the tea vendor's pour and the alley cat's landing, and hardest of all himself. Naturally he now plans to drown this rare, fragile triumph in shochu at the corner izakaya, promising, as he always promises, that tonight is merely a toast and tomorrow the discipline returns in full, katana-sharp and unslouched. He will wake at noon, measure his own hangover on a scale of one to disappointing, and call it, generously, a passing grade.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Lived-in color. The Warm Grey background belongs to fighters who have been through enough that their edges have softened without their core changing.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Comfort and culture combined. The Sushi Love Loose Kimono fighters dress for the life they're building, not the fight they're in.
'Junichiro' — pure first son, the standard the others are measured against, usually by Junichiro himself. Flawless form, cleanest blade, a line that held because he'd sooner die than break it.
Carried more than worn. The Pocket Glasses fighters have perfect vision when they choose to apply it — the rest of the time, they let instinct run.
Clean but rough. The White Ruffian fighters look like they could have behaved properly and chose not to. The white makes the choice more visible.
Not defensive. Offensive. The Floral Parasol fighters weaponized elegance — opponents hesitate before striking something that looks like it shouldn't be there.
