Junichiro still tells it like a triumph, chin tilted, as if precision were the point and not the fact that his blade found a monkey instead of the superior he'd sworn to end in the Okiyo region. He has graded that morning a thousand times since, the footwork, the angle of his wrist, the exact millisecond his focus slipped from rival to primate, and he always scores himself an unforgivable fail even while insisting to everyone else it was flawless. These days he measures the dojo's degenerates the same clinical way, judging their sloppy stances and their floor-priced discipline, all while nursing a joint he swears is 'for calibration purposes' and losing that battle nightly. He walks around proud, spine straight as a katana, because pride is the only armor left when your greatest kill was an accident and your worst critic sleeps in your own skull. Ask him about the monkey and he'll correct your form before he answers, then quietly, forever, correct his own.
