Diary
Junichiro had always graded himself on a scale no one else could see, and by that scale the sake house should have been beneath him, a place for lesser men with lesser resolve. He went anyway, told himself it was reconnaissance, told himself a first son of discipline could survive one night among degenerates without becoming one, and by dawn he had lost both his coin purse and his good health in the same careless hour. He catalogued the failure with the precision he once reserved for sword drills, noting the exact moment his guard dropped, the exact stranger who lifted his purse while he was otherwise occupied and regretting it. Now he kneels before Buddha each morning, spine straight as a blade, insisting to himself that this is the discipline he lost, though he still measures the incense sticks for perfect symmetry and silently judges the monks who burn them unevenly. Enlightenment, he has decided, is simply another exam, and he fully intends to pass it, right after he stops flinching every time he needs to relieve himself.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The red Oni rages where the blue Oni waits. The Red Oni Tattoo fighters run hot and they are at peace with this.
'Junichiro' — pure first son, the standard the others are measured against, usually by Junichiro himself. Flawless form, cleanest blade, a line that held because he'd sooner die than break it.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Tied before the fight. The Green Bandana fighters have a ritual of preparation — the bandana is how they mark the transition.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
