Diary
Junichiro had drafted a plan for the challenge, three pages, margins straight as a blade's edge, every strike accounted for down to the angle of his heel, because a first son does not simply ape into the Fight Pits against the dojo master without a thesis. The old master needed one exchange, a single unglamorous elbow, to send two of Junichiro's teeth skittering across the dirt like dice on a losing table. He remembers grading himself in real time even as he spat blood, docking points for footwork, for hesitation, for the arrogance of thinking discipline was something you could floor-price your way into after years of sake and slack afternoons. Now he keeps his mouth shut more than he used to, practices his forms alone at dawn with a gap in his smile he refuses to let anyone photograph, and journals every failed rep in a ledger no one else is allowed to read. He tells the younger fighters that precision is everything, that sloppiness rots a man from the inside, all while secretly, nightly, running his tongue over the empty space and grading his own ruin an F he has not yet forgiven.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
War color, formal cut. The Red Warrior Kimono fighters dressed for the battle they expected and arrived at the one they got.
'Junichiro' — pure first son, the standard the others are measured against, usually by Junichiro himself. Flawless form, cleanest blade, a line that held because he'd sooner die than break it.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The Dojo wrote on it. The Degen Graffiti Rice Hat fighters carry the collection's mark on the highest point of their body.
The weighted hook-blade on a rope. Distance and cutting in one weapon. The Heavy Kyoketsu fighters control range — nothing happens at a distance they didn't set.
