Diary
Junichiro once measured every strike he threw against the strikes he imagined his ancestors would approve of, and by that impossible ruler he always came up short, though he told no one, least of all himself out loud. He carried that overconfidence into the bamboo forest like a blade he'd never properly sharpened, certain that touching Haruto in a duel of honor would be a formality, a footnote before his inevitable ascension. It was not a footnote. Haruto rearranged his understanding of himself in the space of a few humiliating seconds, and Junichiro walked out of those green corridors diminished, aped into a fight he thought he'd already won on paper. Now he grades his own recovery the way he grades everyone else's failures, harshly, exactingly, journaling macros he never follows and dojo hours he keeps missing for one more bowl and one more sake, all while insisting to anyone within earshot that better days are simply overdue, not undeserved.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
No clothing needed. The Shirtless Runt fighters removed every layer between themselves and the fight. Maximum exposure. Maximum honesty.
'Junichiro' — pure first son, the standard the others are measured against, usually by Junichiro himself. Flawless form, cleanest blade, a line that held because he'd sooner die than break it.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Color and structure combined. The Orange Bantu Knots fighters make their warmth architectural.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
