Junichiro had scored the sparring day the way he scored everything, form at ninety-two percent, discipline slipping, and so when Raiku the Stoner floated in half-baked and grinning, blunt smoke curling off him like some rugged incense offering, Junichiro's palm found his cheek before his ledger of restraint could object. The slap rang clean, a single perfect note in an otherwise sloppy dojo, and for one glorious second Junichiro felt like the eldest son his father always demanded, precise, sharp, worthy. Then the sake came out to celebrate or apologize, he can no longer recall which, and by the third round he was measuring the floorboards with his own forehead, muttering about honor while the room spun like a rug pull he never saw coming. Now, hungover and humiliated, he has declared he will write a book on self-mastery, title pending, chapter one still blank, and every night he sits with brush in hand grading his own failure against a standard no one but he still worships. He tells himself the book will fix him, knowing, as always, that he is the harshest judge on a panel of one who keeps failing his own exam.
