He had measured the broth's temperature by eye, judged the chopstick angle of the man beside him and found it wanting, and never once considered that his own stomach was the weakest link in the room. Betrayal came fast and total, and what followed the diarrhea was worse, a shameful spiral into shochu meant to erase the memory that instead engraved it permanently into the ledger he keeps of his own failures. Now he re-enters that same noodle house monthly, spine straight, notebook in hand, swearing this time discipline will hold, and every month the broth wins again. He scores himself an F, files it away with the others, and tells himself the eighteenth clause will be the one that finally saves him.”
