Diary
Serious Oleg does not remember the palace roof tiles as slick with sake and regret, the way the other dojo drunks tell it; he remembers them as a battlefield, and battlefields are sacred. He went up there seeking discipline, a moonlit ronin ritual of his own invention, and instead found a pig, and a fever, and something the temple doctor called an affliction and Oleg calls destiny. He does not joke about the pig. He has never joked about anything, not once, not even the night the infection set his blood to burning like a shogun's forge, because to Oleg love and consequence arrive with the same grim gravity, whether it is a blade or a farm animal or a rash that will not quit. He tells himself daily that tomorrow he begins again, cold water, cold steel, no roofs, no beasts, no vice, and daily the floor of his resolve gets rugged out from under him by memory of soft pink ears in starlight. He will never be the same man, he says it like a vow sworn before ancestors, and somewhere in the Dojo the others laugh, not unkindly, at a warrior who took heartbreak and gonorrhea with the same unblinking honor a samurai gives death.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Royalty that refused the crown. The Purple Night backgrounds belong to fighters who could have been somewhere easier and chose not to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Not a garment — a record. The Battle Scars clothing is what's left after everything else was stripped away. These fighters wear their history.
Of all the Olegs, the one who never got the memo any of it was supposed to be funny. He made war a vocation — grave, total, and frightening for exactly that reason.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Practical and armed. The Hair Bun With Chopsticks fighters put utensils in their hair and call it hair care — the dual function is not accidental.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
