Oleg entered the sake house the way old ronin once entered burning castles, spine straight, jaw set, ready to challenge the dojo master to a duel of honor over some slight only he remembered with total clarity. Somewhere between his third declaration of bushido and his fifth cup of warm sake, a stranger's fingers found the gold ring in his ear and simply took it, quiet as a rug pull, gone before Oleg finished his sentence about discipline. He noticed only when the room's laughter sharpened into something aimed at him, and he touched the bare lobe with the solemnity of a man discovering a wound in battle. Now he tells the story like a sutra, voice grave, eyes distant, insisting the theft taught him humility, though anyone watching him still order the dojo master to spar him mid-sentence over unpaid tabs knows the lesson has not quite landed. Oleg calls it growth. Everyone else calls it Tuesday.
