Serious Oleg received The Degen Scholar in the family home with the correct number of bows and not one joke, which the Scholar found unbearably funny and Oleg did not find funny at all. Between sips of tea gone cold and a haze of weed smoke Oleg pretended not to notice, the Scholar spoke of forms and footwork and the old katas, and something in Oleg's chest clicked into place like a blade finding its saya. He announced, without irony, that his calling was to teach self defense to the unworthy masses of the dojo, and he has not smiled since making that vow. Each morning he sets a rigid schedule of discipline, drills at dawn, silence at noon, meditation at dusk, and each morning the schedule dies quietly beneath naps, tilted floor charts, and a second bag of weed he swears is for
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
