Oleg climbed Mount Fuji alone, in full seriousness, to offer a prayer that he had rehearsed for eleven days in front of a cracked mirror, and the mountain, unimpressed by his sincerity, answered him with a wind that felt like judgment. He descended a tainted man, he says, though no one at the dojo can agree on what exactly was tainted, only that Oleg now speaks of himself the way monks speak of fallen empires. Determined to meet dishonor with discipline, he announced a strict regimen of solemn drinking, one cup per sorrow, measured and precise, like a man performing a tea ceremony with sake instead of tea. Three cups in, the sorrows multiplied faster than the count, and Oleg was found bowing to a vending machine, apologizing to it in the old tongue for reasons he could not later recall. He still insists the ritual worked exactly as intended, and no one has the heart, or the courage, to tell him otherwise.
