Oleg does not laugh. Oleg has never laughed, not once, not even the night the dojo elders declared war over, and something in him has been standing at attention ever since, waiting for orders that will not come. So when the others speak in hushed, snickering tones of the incident at the whorehouse, of the fish cakes, of what happened to his nipples, Oleg regards them with the flat, glacial patience of a man who has decided a memory is beneath the dignity of memory itself. He has filed it away with the discipline of a true swordsman, the same discipline he swears he still carries, though his ledger of broken vows grows longer than his katana ever was, floor price of his self-control rugged sometime around the third sake. He trains at dawn in grim silence, bandages hidden beneath his gi, and if you ask him about that night at the brothel he will only stare through you like you asked him to explain the wind, and say, with total gravity,
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
