Diary
Every dawn in Kyoto's fog Oleg returns to the alley behind the pachinko parlor, where an old woman once spat upon his sandal and, in doing so, unmade him completely. He does not call it luck or humiliation; he calls it transmission, a lineage of one, and he bows to that memory with the same gravity his ancestors bowed to swords. The dojo laughs when he reenacts it each morning, hawking politely at his own reflection before drinking watered sake like it is ceremonial tea, but Oleg does not laugh, because enlightenment is not a joke and neither, apparently, is phlegm. He tries daily to rebuild the discipline that moment supposedly unlocked, rising at fourth bell to meditate, and daily he is derailed by a dice game, a blunt, or the profound spiritual weight of a floor price dumping. Still he sits in that alley some nights, incense burning, whispering thank you to a woman who is definitely dead now, utterly convinced that misty humiliation was the truest teaching he has ever received.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Left the order. Didn't stop fighting. The Dejen Apostate fighters broke from whatever school trained them and found that the training stayed anyway.
Of all the Olegs, the one who never got the memo any of it was supposed to be funny. He made war a vocation — grave, total, and frightening for exactly that reason.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Ceremony interrupted. The Disheveled Geisha fighters started something formal and ended something entirely different.
