Diary
Botan once stood watch at the gates of Himeji with a blade so calm it never trembled, but tonight he stood in his own quarters, nipples split and weeping, having robbed his own gambling crew mid dice-roll like it was the most natural transaction in the world. He didn't flinch when the blood soaked through his gi, only glanced down at it the way a man checks the weather, mildly curious, entirely unbothered. "Discipline," he told the empty room, "is just fear wearing a nicer robe," and since he'd had his fear surgically removed years ago on some forgotten battlefield, discipline had nowhere left to live in him either. He swore, as he always does, that tonight would be the night he sat in silence and meditated on his sins instead of drowning them, and then he poured the first cup of sake directly into the wound, calling it disinfectant, calling it destiny, calling it Tuesday. By the third bottle he was laughing at the ceiling, bleeding and broke and somehow the calmest man in the whole cursed dojo.
Without the gold. The Jesuit Crosses fighters have the same conviction but carry it lighter — the weight is in the belief, not the metal.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Ritual clothing for someone who crossed between worlds. The Bird Shaman fighters dress for the journey they're already on, not the destination.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Architecture on the scalp. Each knot a decision. The Black Bantu Knots fighters make their choices visible at the top, where everyone can see.
Organization-issue. The Yakuza Club fighters have backup in the weight of the weapon itself — it carries institutional authority.
