Diary
They tested Botan's will inside the gambling house, passed the weed around like a dare, watched for the flinch that never came, because fear was a thing surgeons had taken out of him years ago along with whatever organ makes men worry about rent. He exhaled slow, stared down three yakuza who thought smoke in his lungs meant panic in his blood, and said the unsayable out loud: that he'd rather be shoveling literal excrement than sitting here losing another koku to a rigged dice cup. That was the old life, the samurai groundskeeper days, mucking stalls at dawn with a discipline so total it never once occurred to him to be afraid of horse shit or duty or death. Now discipline is a floor he keeps missing, a chip stack he keeps rugging himself, and still he grins gallows-calm at the table, because a man who cleaned actual poop for a living learned long ago that nothing at this table can smell worse than what he's already survived.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
No clothing needed. The Shirtless Runt fighters removed every layer between themselves and the fight. Maximum exposure. Maximum honesty.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Heavy. Absolute. The Black Iron Kabuto fighters chose protection over style and discovered that in the Dojo, this IS style.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
