Botan fought Junichiro among the koi ponds and bonsai of the Dojo gardens, and the older monks still swear the boy never once blinked, not when steel kissed his collarbone, not when he lost two teeth to a knee that should have ended him. Fear had been carved out of him somewhere between the old wars and the new vices, the way a man scoops the pit from a peach, and what remained was a calm so total it unsettled his own sensei. He walked away from that duel with a busted rib and a legend, and instead of meditating on the loss of blood the way tradition demanded, he lit a joint on the dojo steps and declared, out loud, that discipline was cope invented by people who'd never been properly rugged by life. Now he sits cross-legged behind a folding table selling hand-copied pages of something he calls the Degen Handbook, chapter one titled
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Royalty that refused the crown. The Purple Night backgrounds belong to fighters who could have been somewhere easier and chose not to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Cold and precise. The Blue Warrior Kimono fighters arrived dressed for a specific kind of fight — the one they had already decided how to win.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Ceremony interrupted. The Disheveled Geisha fighters started something formal and ended something entirely different.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
