Diary
Botan sat cross-legged beneath the sakura at Ikari's feet, petals dropping onto his shoulders like the world's most unbothered snow, and he talked. Not small talk either, he went straight for the marrow, telling Ikari things about fear and death and the smell of old battlefields that made lesser samurai flinch, but Botan never flinches, that part of him got left on some forgotten field years ago. Somewhere between the third confession and the fifth, his charisma stat ticked upward, not because he charmed anyone but because nothing rattles a man who's already made peace with rot, and rot-proof men are magnetic whether they mean to be or not. He knows he has issues stacked like unpaid izakaya tabs, knows a real ronin would meditate them into silence instead of narrating them to a stone-faced training dummy under blossoms, and he tries, briefly, to sit in disciplined stillness before deciding the sake jar two feet away is more honest company. Still, the sakura keep falling, Ikari keeps listening in that eternal wooden way, and Botan keeps talking, unafraid, unfixed, and somehow more likable for it.
Worn as trophy or warning — nobody is quite sure which. The Chicken Bones fighters have a ceremony for everything and share it with no one.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Wore everything out. The Dirty Peasant Rags fighters have been in the Dojo so long that newness has become impossible — everything they own carries the evidence.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The Dojo's version of a mohawk. More specific, more named. The Dejen Mohawk fighters chose the Dojo's interpretation of rebellion over the generic one.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
