Diary
Botan snapped his elbow clean in half during the vows, mid dip, mid drunken bow, right there in the lantern haze of the red light district, and did not so much as flinch, because fear was surgically removed from him years ago along with his good sense. The geisha screamed, the priest fainted, the sake spilled across tatami like a battlefield after a rout, and Botan just stared at the bone poking through his sleeve and said, calm as a man reading a menu, that this was, statistically, his best wedding yet. Somewhere behind his ribs the old samurai code whispered about composure, about discipline, about not marrying strangers while blackout drunk on borrowed yen, and Botan told that voice to sit down and mind its own business. He has tried, since, to rebuild some semblance of order, sworn off weed before noon, sworn off vows before sunrise, and failed both within the week. Still, arm in a sling made of old obi silk, he calls it the happiest injury of his degenerate life, and dares anyone, anyone at all, to tell him he looks miserable.“
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Still learning. The Student Gi fighters are the most dangerous in the Dojo — they have no habits yet, no fixed patterns, no ceiling.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Named for the legendary swordsman. The Flowing Battousai fighters carry the name of the fastest draw in the collection's lore — and the hair confirms they take this seriously.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
