Diary
Shitless Botan once stood so still in the face of death that enemy blades trembled before he did, a swordsman whose nerves had been surgically excised somewhere between his first duel and his last regret. On a high moon evening he sat across from Raiku with a joint the size of a wakizashi and a fortune he'd spent decades building, and by dawn the fortune was gone, evaporated into some smoke-thick agreement he vaguely recalls nodding along to. He does not panic, he does not rage, he simply looks at his empty coffers the way he once looked at severed limbs on old battlefields, with the flat, unblinking calm of a man who decided long ago that fear was a tax he refused to pay. Botan has chosen, with the same discipline he swore he'd bring back to his life and immediately abandoned again, to simply forget the whole affair ever happened, filing it under the same drawer as his New Year's resolutions and his promise to only take one hit. Somewhere Raiku is laughing, somewhere Botan's old sensei is weeping, and somewhere Botan himself is unbothered, rebuilding nothing, remembering less, unshaken as ever.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Royalty that refused the crown. The Purple Night backgrounds belong to fighters who could have been somewhere easier and chose not to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The Dojo itself, worn. Whoever puts on the Degen Dojo Kimono becomes part of the institution — and the institution becomes part of them.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Heavy. Absolute. The Black Iron Kabuto fighters chose protection over style and discovered that in the Dojo, this IS style.
Made for documentation, used for combat. The Paintbrush fighters record and act simultaneously — every fight is also a portrait.
