Diary
They say Botan's fear was cut out of him somewhere between the last war and the first bad decision, and for years nothing on this earth could make him blink, not blades, not debt collectors, not the eyes of men who meant to kill him. Then came the izakaya, grease-fogged and half-lit, where Oleg sat across a table sticky with old sake and stared at him with something Botan had never learned to name because he'd never needed to. He stared back the way he always did, flat and unbothered, and somewhere in that silence his faith simply packed its bags and left without a note, no drama, no lightning, just gone. Botan tells people he doesn't feel shame the way normal men do, and that's mostly true, except late at night when he replays it and feels something cold pool in his gut that he refuses, on principle, to call fear. He still bows at the dojo altar every morning out of habit, trying to summon back whatever left that night, and every morning it politely declines to show up.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Named for the journey, not the destination. The Recovering Alcoholic fighters are in process — and process is honest in a way that arrival never is.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Architecture on the scalp. Each knot a decision. The Black Bantu Knots fighters make their choices visible at the top, where everyone can see.
Found. Not forged. The Large Branch fighters don't wait for the right weapon — they use what's available and are surprised when this needs explanation.
