Diary
The courtesans of that Kyoto pleasure house descended on Botan like crows on a battlefield corpse, pulling his sleeves, cackling at his blank stare, and somehow he earned favor doing nothing but sitting still while chaos happened to him, which is the only skill fear-removal ever really gave him. His old sensei used to say a samurai plans three moves ahead, so Botan tried, closed his eyes right there among the perfume and the noise, and searched for tomorrow, next week, some vision of discipline restored, and found only static, the same flat gray nothing where his fear used to live. He has attempted meditation four separate times since then, cross-legged on a floor mat, incense burning, and each attempt ends the same way, him standing up twenty minutes later wondering if he left the sake unattended. Whose bones? The fighter who wears them knows. They're not saying. The Finger Bones fighters operate on a level of commitment that most find uncomfortable.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
War color, formal cut. The Red Warrior Kimono fighters dressed for the battle they expected and arrived at the one they got.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The warrior and the wanderer. Worn by those who are between destinations but never between fights.
Found. Not forged. The Large Branch fighters don't wait for the right weapon — they use what's available and are surprised when this needs explanation.
