Botan once wagered the family fief on a single roll in the dirt, the kind of ape you don't recover equity from, and watched centuries of ancestral land get rugged in about four seconds flat. He tells the story now with the same flat, unblinking calm he uses for everything, like a man reciting a menu, because the surgeons who removed his fear apparently left the shame gland fully intact and thriving. "Floor's gone," he says of the land, shrugging, "turns out honor doesn't have a floor either." He swears, each morning, that today is the day he returns to discipline, cold water, cold steel, no dice, no leaf, and each morning by noon he is somehow high, broke, and dueling a stranger for a bag of edibles he already ate. The shogunate stripped him of rank; the dice stripped him of land; nothing, so far, has managed to strip him of the terrifying, cheerful serenity of a man who has already lost the worst thing he owns and finds the rest of it, mildly, hilarious.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Neither dark nor white. The Light Grey background belongs to fighters who operate in the space between certainties and have made it comfortable there.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Still learning. The Student Gi fighters are the most dangerous in the Dojo — they have no habits yet, no fixed patterns, no ceiling.
'Botan' — a peony, a beautiful flower on a genuinely terrible situation. Somewhere in the wars he saw a thing that removed his fear permanently and never gave it back.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Practical. Focused. The Hair Bun fighters pulled back what was in their eyes so they could see the whole board.
Implies infirmity, delivers otherwise. The Wooden Walking Cane fighters move slower than expected and hit harder than prepared for.
