They called him Azuma, the east, but Toxic Azuma was never the sunrise anyone wanted, only the slow reaction that followed after, the ache in the joints the next morning when the sake had won and honor had lost. It happened in a filthy izakaya thick with grease-smoke and the perfume of regret, where he picked a fight with samurai still clinging to their bushido like it was a floor price that hadn't rugged them yet. Azuma's words came out corrosive, dripping with the wit of a man who used to meditate at dawn and now can't remember the last sunrise he saw sober, each insult landing slow and sure like poison finding a vein. He told himself he was defending something, some scrap of the old code, but really he was just drunk and mean and lonely for the discipline he'd pawned off years ago for a cheaper high. By the time the bowls were broken and the samurai stormed out, Azuma sat alone with his tainted honor and his empty cup, more miserable than he'd ever been, vowing for the hundredth time to do better tomorrow, knowing full well tomorrow he would not.
