Diary
Azuma climbed Fuji the way old masters said a warrior should, seeking the mountain's stillness to arrange his thoughts into something sharp and orderly again, the way they'd been before the wars ended and the world got soft and stupid. He sat at the summit through one sunrise, meditating on breath and blade, and by the second sunrise he'd swapped the breathing exercises for a joint he'd smuggled up in his sandal, figuring the smoke curling into thin mountain air counted as a kind of discipline too. His thoughts did arrange themselves, eventually, into a tidy little poison: patience, cruelty, timing, delivered slow like everything he touches, the venom that doesn't hit until three exchanges later when his opponent's already celebrating. He came down the mountain no calmer, no more monk-like, floor price of his enlightenment rugged somewhere around hour six, but undeniably more dangerous, which he insists was the actual assignment all along. He regrets nothing, not the mountain, not the joint, not the version of himself that keeps failing to become disciplined and somehow keeps winning anyway.
Worn deliberately. The Nails fighters made choices with their appearance that most would call unconventional and they would call honest.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Not a garment — a record. The Battle Scars clothing is what's left after everything else was stripped away. These fighters wear their history.
Another east, but where Drooling Azuma's is the honest sunrise, Toxic's is where the reaction happens — the direction things curdle. Same name, entirely different chemistry.
The Dojo itself, rendered on glass. The Dojo Graffiti fighters see everything through the collection's own aesthetic — they can't separate themselves from it.
Wild, electrified. The Zapachi fighters' hair moves independently and the fighter has accepted that this is appropriate.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
