Diary
In the grey mists of Kōga where the mountain breath hangs low and rots the edges of the pines, Toxic Azuma sparred with a crew of scumbags who called themselves training partners and were mostly just excuses to drink at noon. He came for discipline, the old katas, the breath control his sensei once beat into him with a bamboo switch, but the mist got in his lungs and the sake got in his blood and somewhere between the third bout and the ninth cup the training dissolved into a slow, communal poisoning he didn't resist. Azuma has always been the reaction rather than the sunrise, the thing that works on you quietly after you've already stopped watching for it, and drunk in that fog he finally felt like himself, corroded and calm. He told himself tomorrow he'd wake early, run the ridge, purify the body like the old scrolls demanded. He has never felt better, which is precisely the problem, and precisely why he isn't worried about it yet.
Whose bones? The fighter who wears them knows. They're not saying. The Finger Bones fighters operate on a level of commitment that most find uncomfortable.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Grew things before they fought things. The Farmer clothing is the clearest record of what a fighter was before the Dojo changed them.
Another east, but where Drooling Azuma's is the honest sunrise, Toxic's is where the reaction happens — the direction things curdle. Same name, entirely different chemistry.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Time made visible, flowing. Flowing Dreads fighters carry their history in motion — every lock a year, and the years are moving now.
Used and not cleaned. The Bloody Nunchucks fighters are efficient — cleaning was someone else's job and they had the next fight to prepare for.
