Diary
They call him Azuma for the east, but there is no sunrise in him, only the slow poison that follows one, the ache that arrives hours after the wound and lingers for a lifetime. In Okinawa the salt air used to sharpen him, back when his blade was disciplined and his eyes tracked enemies instead of rivals, but the moment he clocked Goro strutting the beach like he'd aped into main character energy, something curdled sweet and toxic in Azuma's chest. He told himself one drink, the old samurai lie, the same promise every dojo dropout makes before the bottle rugs them completely, and by the fourth he was reaction rather than reasoning, corrosive charm spilling out at anyone within earshot about Goro's crimes against dignity. He does not remember standing, only waking sideways in sand with sake in his hair and no memory of the walk back, and somehow, infuriatingly, he has never felt better, poison mistaken for peace. Discipline was supposed to be the floor he never broke through, but Azuma keeps discovering there is always another level of drunk beneath the one he swore was rock bottom.
Worn deliberately. The Nails fighters made choices with their appearance that most would call unconventional and they would call honest.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Blessed by the Dojo's own rites. The Ordained Dejen fighters carry something that can't be revoked — the Dojo recognized them and that recognition is permanent.
Another east, but where Drooling Azuma's is the honest sunrise, Toxic's is where the reaction happens — the direction things curdle. Same name, entirely different chemistry.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Crow spirit, long nose, ancient power. The Tengu Mask fighters are wearing something that predates the Dojo — something older that chose to be here.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
