Diary
Young Yuji never got a real war, just the tail end of one, so he goes looking for battles in places a smarter kid would tiptoe past, like the private quarters of a samurai twice his age and thrice his rank. He stands there at 3am, eyes red from no sleep and something rolled tighter than his self control, mouthing off about the man's technique like he's got room to talk, and somehow, impossibly, the insult lands as respect instead of a death sentence. The samurai laughs, claps him on the shoulder, calls him something between a fool and a favorite, and just like that Yuji's got favor he didn't earn through discipline, only through sheer reckless mouth. He tells himself tomorrow he'll wake up early, meditate, train before the sun, be the kind of disciplined warrior the old stories talk about, and he almost believes it as he pours one more drink to celebrate the glory he can already feel slipping past him again. Still, he grins at the ceiling, chasing a war that already ended, betting on better days like they're a coin flip he can't lose.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Lord's garment worn into battle. The Daimyo Warrior Kimono fighters have authority they didn't ask for and intention they haven't announced.
Still becoming, and always will be — the wars ended before he got to finish. All promise and no scars, certain his great chapter was over the next hill. The hill turned out to be the last one.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Clean but rough. The White Ruffian fighters look like they could have behaved properly and chose not to. The white makes the choice more visible.
The weighted hook-blade on a rope. Distance and cutting in one weapon. The Heavy Kyoketsu fighters control range — nothing happens at a distance they didn't set.
