Young Yuji never got a war worth his sword, just the tail end of one that packed up and left before he could prove anything, so he went looking for scraps of glory in back alleys instead, throwing hands with actual ninja like it was still feudal times and not some 2am scuffle behind a ramen stall. He talked a big game after, mouth running faster than his feet ever could, bragging to anyone half awake about how he'd humbled shadow warriors with nothing but attitude and a rusted wakizashi he found at a flea market. Turns out the ninja he was crowing about left him with a shuriken scar and a bruised ego, and word got back to him fast, the way embarrassing things always do in a town this small. Now he sits cross legged trying to meditate like the old scrolls say, promising himself discipline, silence, humility, lasting maybe ninety seconds before his leg starts bouncing and his mouth starts running again about the next fight he definitely won't lose. Sleep still doesn't come easy, glory still feels like it left on the last train out, but at least now when Young Yuji brags, he leaves out the part where he actually won.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The standard-bearer. The Proud Dejen Kimono fighters represent the collection consciously — they know what they're part of and they dress accordingly.
Still becoming, and always will be — the wars ended before he got to finish. All promise and no scars, certain his great chapter was over the next hill. The hill turned out to be the last one.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Color and structure combined. The Orange Bantu Knots fighters make their warmth architectural.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
