Diary
Young Yuji never got his war, so he built one out of bedsheets and bad decisions, waking at 3 a.m. to find his own room ringed with degens he vaguely remembered aping in with hours before. He was up on the mattress like it was a castle wall, screaming obscenities at women who were only trying to help him find his pants, sword-hand twitching for a blade that had long since been sold for weed money. Somewhere under the noise a small disciplined voice, the one his old sensei planted in him before the peace treaties rugged his purpose, begged him to breathe, to kneel, to remember bushido was quieter than this. He told that voice to check the floor price on his patience, which was zero, then went back to hollering like glory was a thing you could summon by volume alone. In the morning, ears ringing, dignity rugged clean off him, he grinned at the wreckage and said he regretted nothing, because a war that never came still deserved a battle cry.
Worn deliberately. The Nails fighters made choices with their appearance that most would call unconventional and they would call honest.
Lived-in color. The Warm Grey background belongs to fighters who have been through enough that their edges have softened without their core changing.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Blessed by the Dojo's own rites. The Ordained Dejen fighters carry something that can't be revoked — the Dojo recognized them and that recognition is permanent.
Still becoming, and always will be — the wars ended before he got to finish. All promise and no scars, certain his great chapter was over the next hill. The hill turned out to be the last one.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Implies infirmity, delivers otherwise. The Wooden Walking Cane fighters move slower than expected and hit harder than prepared for.
