Diary
Young Yuji was born a beat after the last war ended, and he's spent every waking hour since trying to catch up to a glory that packed its bags before he even showed up, so of course he thought betting his whole bag on a horse race while riding standing up on the saddle like some cracked-out jockey samurai was a reasonable plan. The horse, unimpressed by his war stories he never actually lived through, bucked him clean into the dirt outside the Dojo gates, and he came up spitting teeth and laughing like it was the best trade he'd ever made. Sensei didn't find the humor in a student gambling away his savings and half his smile in the same afternoon, so Yuji got walked out with his gi still dusty and his mouth still bleeding, muttering something about how discipline is just glory with the fun surgically removed. He swears every night, usually around 3 a.m. with his eyes wide open and his pockets empty, that tomorrow he starts training again for real, no more dice, no more horses, no more chasing the ghost of a war he was too young to bleed in. Tomorrow never really shows up, but Yuji does, missing teeth, missing sleep, still convinced the next bet is the one that gets him back inside those gates a legend instead of a punchline.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Blessed by the Dojo's own rites. The Ordained Dejen fighters carry something that can't be revoked — the Dojo recognized them and that recognition is permanent.
Still becoming, and always will be — the wars ended before he got to finish. All promise and no scars, certain his great chapter was over the next hill. The hill turned out to be the last one.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Named for the legendary fighter. The Red Heihachi fighters carry that name's weight in every match and find it light.
The other fish weapon. The Dead Fish fighters use something that smells like loss as a weapon — opponents are too confused to defend properly.
