Diary
Young Yuji never got his real war, so he built tiny ones instead, kneeling at dawn behind the main Buddhist temple with a shoebox arena and two rhinoceros beetles named after generals he'd only read about in scrolls. He'd bet his grandfather's obi on a beetle called Thunderfist, sure the little armored bastard carried the same restless hunger keeping him up at 3 a.m. every night since the fighting stopped. The monks caught him mid-match, incense smoke curling over broken tiles and gambling chits, and the shame of it hit harder than any blade ever could, dignity gone quieter than he expected, like a candle just giving up. Now he sits sharpening a dull tanto he found in a pawn shop, whispering about seppuku like it's the last noble move left on the board, though his hands shake more from three energy drinks than resolve. He wants discipline so bad it aches, but even his death plan keeps getting interrupted by the urge to check if Thunderfist's rematch is still on for Saturday.
Whose bones? The fighter who wears them knows. They're not saying. The Finger Bones fighters operate on a level of commitment that most find uncomfortable.
Royalty that refused the crown. The Purple Night backgrounds belong to fighters who could have been somewhere easier and chose not to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Wore everything out. The Dirty Peasant Rags fighters have been in the Dojo so long that newness has become impossible — everything they own carries the evidence.
Still becoming, and always will be — the wars ended before he got to finish. All promise and no scars, certain his great chapter was over the next hill. The hill turned out to be the last one.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The Dojo wrote on it. The Degen Graffiti Rice Hat fighters carry the collection's mark on the highest point of their body.
The magical longbow. The Runed Yumi fighters inscribed power into their range weapon — the runes are the reason the arrows find what they're looking for.
