Young Yuji was born a decade too late for the last real war, so he built himself a smaller one, right there in the tangled sheets of his own bed, flirting with Rin like the whole future depended on it. He never learned to sit still, this kid, the discipline of the old dojo drills sliding off him like sake off a lacquered cup, and so he mouthed off, pushed too hard, behaved badly in that specific reckless way of someone who has never once slept through a full night. Somewhere under the bravado is a boy who wanted to be a soldier and got handed a phone, a floor price, and a heart that won't quiet down, and he chases the ghost of glory the same way he chases sleep, never quite catching either. He knows he should apologize, should breathe, should be better tomorrow, and he genuinely means it every single time he says so. Still he grins into the dark, certain the good days are just ahead, close enough to touch, close enough to keep running toward.”
