Diary
Young Yuji was going to be shogun, everyone said so, back when the war still had use for boys who never slept and never blinked in a duel. Then the peace came too early, the way it always does for the ones who needed it least, and Yuji found himself in a smoke-choked gambling house at three in the morning, chasing a high card and a glory that had already packed up and left town without him. An old man, toothless and unimpressed, spat clean across the table when Yuji's bluff collapsed, and something in that wet contemptuous arc landed harder than any blade ever had. So now he sits before a small chipped Buddha he bought off a peddler, cross-legged, eyes wide open at dawn because sleep still refuses him, swearing this is the week he finally finds stillness. He lasts about four minutes before his knee starts bouncing, his mind's already three hands deep into a game that hasn't been dealt yet, and the Buddha just watches him lose the only fight he never trained for.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Still becoming, and always will be — the wars ended before he got to finish. All promise and no scars, certain his great chapter was over the next hill. The hill turned out to be the last one.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
After. The Messy fighters' hair tells you what happened — not what they planned, but what they went through.
The floor weapon. Everywhere. Common because common is honest — the Rusty Nail fighters know that what you find is often better than what you planned.
