Yuji The Wise once kept a ledger of virtues the way other men keep sake, rationed and sacred, but somewhere between the third round and the fourth toast at the Dojo Towers, he set the ledger down and never quite picked it back up. The English Pilot, ever the affable ruinist, poured with the generosity of a man who had never once been asked to be wise, and Yuji, scholar of restraint, found his faith sliding off him like armor loosened after too long a peace. He remembers narrating the moment even as it happened, some traitor part of his mind already drafting the chronicle: here the sage falters, here the vow cracks, here the floor of his own discipline rugs him without warning. By dawn he had sworn, hand over heart and head still spinning, to become a better man, a vow he now revises nightly with the same devoted futility of a monk rewriting a sutra he keeps forgetting to read. Still he writes it down each time, because a chronicler's real faith was never in the outcome, only in showing up to record the beautiful, ongoing failure of trying.
