Diary
Yuji The Wise once kept ledgers of troop movements and moral virtue with the same steady hand, a scribe who believed discipline was simply attention paid correctly. Then the wars ended, the swords went to rust, and Yuji discovered that attention, unsupervised, wanders into strange rooms, one of which happened to be a guest futon in his own family's house, where he caught something that no scroll in his father's library had a chapter for. He narrates the incident now with the clinical distance of a man footnoting his own downfall, noting wryly that a samurai's mojo, once lost to a venereal misadventure under his ancestors' roof, does not return simply because you meditate at it. He has resolved, as he resolves most mornings before the sake arrives, to curate better company, sharper minds, cleaner floors, degens with at least a passing interest in personal hygiene and honor. So far his highest quality new friend is a rooster who steals his snacks and judges him silently, and Yuji, ever the chronicler, records this too as further proof that the man who lost his nerve still cannot quite lose his sense of humor about it.
Without the gold. The Jesuit Crosses fighters have the same conviction but carry it lighter — the weight is in the belief, not the metal.
Lived-in color. The Warm Grey background belongs to fighters who have been through enough that their edges have softened without their core changing.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
A fighter first and a thinker second — until the day he laughed with Haru in the streets and simply set the sword down for good. He calls it wisdom; some call it losing his nerve.
Precious material on the most important tool. The Golden Glasses fighters invested in how they see — and the investment shows.
Practical and armed. The Hair Bun With Chopsticks fighters put utensils in their hair and call it hair care — the dual function is not accidental.
