Diary
Yuji The Wise once kept meticulous records of every duel fought within the Dojo gardens, a self-appointed historian of other men's honor, until the day Azuma made him the subject of his own footnotes. The bout itself lasted less time than it takes to steep tea, Azuma's blade finding him thrice before Yuji finished narrating his own opening stance aloud, a habit he swears helps his focus though the scrolls suggest otherwise. Stripped of respectability in front of the koi pond and a small crowd who will never let him forget it, Yuji has now retreated into the jungle beyond the temple walls, telling himself it is a scholar's exile for reflection and not a degen's flight from shame. There, between badly rolled joints and worse haiku, he narrates his own decline with the same dry wit he once reserved for greater men, cataloguing his cowardice like it might someday be worth something on the floor. He still means to return, sword sharpened and discipline restored, right after this next paragraph, this next bowl, this next perfectly reasonable excuse.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Still learning. The Student Gi fighters are the most dangerous in the Dojo — they have no habits yet, no fixed patterns, no ceiling.
A fighter first and a thinker second — until the day he laughed with Haru in the streets and simply set the sword down for good. He calls it wisdom; some call it losing his nerve.
Demon woman, half revealed. The Hannya Half Mask fighters show the monstrous half and keep the human half private.
Named for the legendary swordsman. The Flowing Battousai fighters carry the name of the fastest draw in the collection's lore — and the hair confirms they take this seriously.
Used and not cleaned. The Bloody Nunchucks fighters are efficient — cleaning was someone else's job and they had the next fight to prepare for.
