Yuji The Wise, self-appointed chronicler of his own decline, records the incident thus: on the hottest day since records began, he attempted the one disciplined act left in his routine, the pressing of his kimono, and the heat rugged his good sense entirely. Clothes came off in stages, first the obi, then everything else, a slow unaping of dignity that he later footnoted as 'thermal necessity, not vice.' He tells himself this was strategy, not surrender, the same way he tells himself the empty sake jugs by his writing desk are 'research materials' on the fall of samurai discipline. Now he strides the training yard bare-chested and inexplicably proud, iron in one hand, unfinished kimono in the other, narrating his own legend like a man who has confused confidence with clothing. Historians will call it madness; Yuji calls it the first honest chapter he has written in years.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
