Diary
Yuji The Wise, once a keeper of scrolls and a mind trained to weigh every gesture for meaning, found himself in Okinawa cataloguing an entirely different kind of data: the precise arc of an elderly woman's spit as it sailed past his topknot and into legend. He noted, with the detachment of a true historian, that this was the third such incident that week, and that his growing collection of degens, gathered like stray coins on the floor of some cosmic casino, seemed to find his disgrace uproarious rather than dishonorable. He told himself he was merely observing, chronicling the fall of a swordsman into softer company, but even as he wrote it down he was already ordering another round and forgetting the vow of restraint he'd sworn that very morning. The old samurai in him whispered that dignity mattered, that discipline was a blade that dulled without practice, yet the degen in him only laughed and passed the joint. So he closes this entry the way he closes most these days, slightly damp, thoroughly aped, and without a single trace of regret.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Blessed by the Dojo's own rites. The Ordained Dejen fighters carry something that can't be revoked — the Dojo recognized them and that recognition is permanent.
A fighter first and a thinker second — until the day he laughed with Haru in the streets and simply set the sword down for good. He calls it wisdom; some call it losing his nerve.
Gold-edged, elevated. The Pompous Glasses fighters have earned the right to look down at something and have chosen to look down at mediocrity.
Aged. Sharp. The Short Spiky Grey fighters have been here long enough for color to leave — and found that what remained is more pointed than before.
Fermented projectile. The Beer Splash fighters found the most abundant thing in the Dojo and weaponized it.
