Diary
Yuji The Wise, once a scribe of clans and keeper of ledgers no one reads anymore, stood shivering in the cold with a joint between two fingers like it was a calligraphy brush, narrating his own frostbite as though history itself were taking notes. He earned favor that night, some elder or spirit or possibly just a very cold raccoon nodding approvingly at his dedication to vice, and Yuji logged it faithfully: 'subject endured elements, gained standing, learned nothing.' He tells himself he is retreating to the jungle now for discipline, for silence, for the meditative clarity his samurai forebears prized, but everyone in the dojo knows he packed three strains and a hammock before he packed a single scroll. There is a ledger entry somewhere that reads 'day one: begin fasting, begin training, begin anew,' followed immediately by 'day one, revised: aped into a nap instead, floor was rugged, humidity won.' Still, he chronicles the failure with such elegant prose that it almost sounds like wisdom, which, in the Dojo, is basically the same thing as having some.
Worn as trophy or warning — nobody is quite sure which. The Chicken Bones fighters have a ceremony for everything and share it with no one.
Red moon, heightened stakes. The Red High Moon backgrounds mark the moments when everything was on the line and the fighter stayed.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Soft exterior. The Puppy Kimono fighters discovered that disarming presentation is its own strategy — you stop seeing the threat until it's too late.
A fighter first and a thinker second — until the day he laughed with Haru in the streets and simply set the sword down for good. He calls it wisdom; some call it losing his nerve.
Still wearing them. The Bloodied Glasses fighters need nothing to be clean to keep seeing clearly.
Practical and armed. The Hair Bun With Chopsticks fighters put utensils in their hair and call it hair care — the dual function is not accidental.
