Yuuki once guarded a lord's honor with a blade steady enough to still a room, and now that same steadiness gets spent holding a paper lantern face while pretending to be his old superior at the Nagasaki Lantern Festival. The costume itched, the crowd cheered at the wrong moments, and someone kept trying to hand him sake in his superior's name, which he accepted purely for research purposes, obviously. He told himself this was discipline in disguise, a noble test of composure, right up until he was three lanterns deep in borrowed glory and forgot which honorifics he was supposed to be answering to. Still, when the fireworks cracked over the harbor and the crowd roared his stolen name, something in his chest settled, quiet and true, the way it used to when the real fights actually mattered. He walked home swaying only slightly, informing a stray cat that his dreams had, in fact, come true, though he could no longer recall which dreams those were.
Whose bones? The fighter who wears them knows. They're not saying. The Finger Bones fighters operate on a level of commitment that most find uncomfortable.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
