Diary
Edmundo came to this dojo as an outsider, sword sworn to a code that was never his by blood, and he kept that oath even the night he lost every other one to Legless Tom in the red light district. They aped into sake bets like they were blue-chip, promised the working girls discounts they had no authority to give, and somewhere around the fourth round Edmundo challenged a paper lantern to a duel and technically won, though the lantern's floor price never recovered. He remembers standing guard duty the next morning still reeking of plum wine, watching the gate with the grim focus of a man defending a castle he'd already burned down the night before. That was seven sleepless nights ago, and he tells himself it's vigilance, not the shakes, that keeps his eyes open, a foreigner's dry joke he repeats to no one in particular. Discipline, he figures, is like Legless Tom's promises: easy to swear to at midnight, gone by morning, and Edmundo keeps guarding the door anyway because someone in this rugged, degenerate dojo has to pretend to be sober.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Red moon, heightened stakes. The Red High Moon backgrounds mark the moments when everything was on the line and the fighter stayed.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Lord's garment worn into battle. The Daimyo Warrior Kimono fighters have authority they didn't ask for and intention they haven't announced.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Still functional. Functionally broken. The Broken Glasses fighters see a cracked version of reality and have found it more honest than the uncracked one.
Nothing hidden. No armor above the neck. The Bald fighters face everything without cover and consider this the only honest approach.
Patience as weapon. The Noose fighters don't rush — they set the conditions and wait for the opponent to walk into them.
