Diary
Edmundo came from somewhere far off the old trade maps, but he chose this dojo the way a man chooses a family, and he guarded its mats with the loyalty of someone who had nothing else to prove until, of course, he had everything to prove. Once he was spoken of with real respect, a steady blade and a steadier eye, until the infamous night he accepted a dare involving an absurd quantity of wasabi and the sacred tatami beneath him, and reputation left the room faster than the tears left his face. The younger fighters still whisper about the sounds he made, somewhere between a war cry and a confession, and the dojo elders quietly moved the good mats to another room afterward. Edmundo, ever watchful, ever dry, insists he was testing his discipline against pain the samurai way, though everyone including him knows discipline had left the building around the same time his dignity did. Still he stands his post each night, jaw set, eyes narrowed at the horizon like a man awaiting invaders, silently rehearsing the comeback story where the wasabi incident becomes legend instead of a punchline he can never quite outrun.
Theology made weapon-adjacent. The Golden Jesuit Crosses fighters have a philosophy and the crosses are its badge — precise, absolute, delivered with complete conviction.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Comfort and culture combined. The Sushi Love Loose Kimono fighters dress for the life they're building, not the fight they're in.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Institutional. The Degen Dojo Headband fighters wear the collection on their head — they are the collection and the collection is them.
Found. Not forged. The Large Branch fighters don't wait for the right weapon — they use what's available and are surprised when this needs explanation.
