Edmundo came to this dojo from somewhere no one could quite place on a map, and he watched everything with the flat, patient eyes of a man who had learned to trust nothing and no one, until he trusted this ragged brotherhood anyway. So when his friend begged him to help an elderly neighbor who'd wandered into the wrong futon at the wrong hour, Edmundo did what any loyal guard would do: he waded in barehanded, samurai instincts screaming that discipline meant showing up even when the situation made no sense. What discipline did not warn him about was the frantic tangle of blankets, flailing limbs, and one stray fingernail that left both his nipples raw and weeping like he'd lost a duel to a very confused grandmother. He pressed a rag to his chest afterward, staring at the ceiling, wondering what future a man builds when his greatest battle wound comes from an act of kindness gone sideways. Still, he told no one to change, because a guard who chose this chaotic place chose it eyes open, blood and all.
