Diary
Edmundo had guarded this crooked stretch of town long enough to know every rooftop and every liar's face, which was exactly why the bandits at the izakaya trusted him to lead them, a foreigner's eye for angles, a samurai's old instinct for formation, dulled now by three too many rounds of shochu he swore he'd only sip. He led the charge admirably for about four minutes, then discipline rugged itself clean out of him and he ended up toasting the very men he was meant to rob blind, calling it strategy, calling it diplomacy, calling it anything but the truth. Morning found him outside that same izakaya with an empty coin purse and a headache shaped like regret, so naturally he did what any dignified ronin-turned-degenerate would do: started selling himself on the corner, one shoulder rub and one sad joke at a time, muttering that this too was a kind of guard duty, protecting fools from their own bad decisions by becoming one himself. He tells himself tomorrow he'll meditate at dawn, tighten the belt, mind the gate like he used to, and every tomorrow the belt loosens a notch further while the streetlamp outside the izakaya watches him lose that fight with the same dry patience he once reserved for watching others lose theirs. Still, he shows up, still he watches, and that loyalty, battered and mortgaged as it is, remains the one part of him nobody's managed to buy off the floor yet.
Heavy. Deliberate. The Gold Earring fighters wear their conviction in precious metal on the outside so everyone knows before they speak.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Unglamorous and honest. The Black Peasant Sack fighters didn't dress for anyone else. They dressed for function and found that function is its own statement.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Gold-edged, elevated. The Pompous Glasses fighters have earned the right to look down at something and have chosen to look down at mediocrity.
Wild, electrified. The Zapachi fighters' hair moves independently and the fighter has accepted that this is appropriate.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
