Edmundo came to Okiyo the way outsiders always do, sword sheathed, eyes wide open, sworn to guard a gate that was never really his but became his anyway. They said he had a shot at glory once, a real one, the kind samurai write ballads about, and he believed it too until the day he sat beneath a crooked pine, packed a bowl of the region's finest weed, and simply forgot to show up. By the time he wandered back, half-lidded and grinning at clouds only he could see, the tournament had crowned someone else and Okiyo had a new legend that wasn't him. He tells it now like a joke on himself, dry as old sake, watchful eyes still scanning every gate for a threat that already happened years ago. Retired from glory, he says, but never from the post, because someone aped into this life for keeps and it might as well be the guy who already lost everything to a joint and a nap.
