Diary
Edmundo had guarded gates in three countries before he ever set foot in Kyoto, and none of those postings taught him what one dojo latrine could. He'd meant only to loosen a floorboard beneath his master's usual squatting spot, a small dishonor for a small grievance, the kind of prank a disciplined man tells himself is still discipline. The board gave way faster than the plan did, and Edmundo's finger paid the toll, bent backward with a crack that echoed off the tiled walls like a temple bell rung by an idiot. He wrapped it himself, badly, muttering in three languages none of the other fighters understood, and something in him did not set right alongside the bone. These days he still watches the gate like the outsider who chose loyalty over leaving, dry-eyed and steady, except when the wind smells like bamboo and old wood, and then the lunatic in him remembers the latrine and grins with his crooked finger raised like a small, ruined flag of victory.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Still learning. The Student Gi fighters are the most dangerous in the Dojo — they have no habits yet, no fixed patterns, no ceiling.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Movement made permanent. The Long Flowing fighters trail behind themselves in every room they enter — the hair arrives first, then the fighter.
The floor weapon. Everywhere. Common because common is honest — the Rusty Nail fighters know that what you find is often better than what you planned.
