Diary
Edmundo had picked this dojo the way a man picks a home instead of inheriting one, watching from the wall for a full season before deciding the discipline here was worth guarding with his life. So when his moment of glory finally came, a formal duel right at the threshold of the shoji doors, he stood tall, blade steady, foreign eyes narrowed in the borrowed solemnity of a samurai who belonged. Then the birds came, a furious cloud of them dropping out of the eaves like the gods themselves had a betting slip on the other guy, and Edmundo went down flapping his arms in a very undignified imitation of the very creatures assaulting him. He tried, afterward, to rebuild some scrap of ceremony, sweeping the feathers off the tatami with the grim focus of a man restoring honor one broom stroke at a time, though he still flinches at pigeons near any entrance. He calls it humility now, dry as ever, but the guards who watch him watch the sky before every match know better than to call it anything but a rug pull with wings.'
One tooth. The whole shark is implied. The Shark Tooth fighters don't need to explain what they've overcome — they wear the evidence.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Maximum exposure by choice. The Nudey Freak fighters are not unclothed by accident — they made a considered decision and stand by it in all weather.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Still functional. Functionally broken. The Broken Glasses fighters see a cracked version of reality and have found it more honest than the uncracked one.
Ancient discipline, modern retention. The Braided Samurai Ponytail fighters maintain something traditional precisely because the world keeps trying to make them let it go.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
